Announcing the launch of a new blog

No fan fare. No trumpets. With this single post we come to an end to any kind of technical discussions in Ipse Dixit. All geeky stuff will now be redirected to g33k – my new official tech space .

Tearfully, for the last time – I’m launching into one more technical babble.

There are really two kinds of blogging I’ve been doing: writing and sharing technical stuff generally desktop customization. However, I soon realized that my limited number of readers were predominantly not interested in any computer- related stuff let alone whatever latest and mightiest conky configuration I had set up. Hence, to cater to my exclusive tech audience I’m starting this new journal of my  tech journey.

Finally a worthy linux torrent client

There are a lot of torrenting clients in Linux. Deluge, Transmission are especially quite good ones. However, none of them could ever touch my beloved utorrent – the king of torrenting clients. In fact, utorrent was a perfect piece of software – lightweight, great at what it does and absolutely intuitive ( Fact is you start hating other pieces of software once you start using it). My quest for the perfect torrenting client in Linux seemed doomed from the start – either it was too much or too little. And that was when I met this incredible piece of software.

My DiStrO StOrY

I’m a man who expects perfection  and I just felt like giving a good solid rant today, so here it goes. In my quest for the perfect distro I have roamed across the vast mine of distros that are available. And everytime I get simply astounded by the sheer variety and choice I have in choosing what distro I need.

Shruti – My Chromium theme

I am in love with a beautiful girl called Shruti and this chrome theme is in dedication to her to prove my everlasting love ( along the lines of the legendary Debian ). :P

Shruti

Hmm … How I wish that the above line was true :( . Frankly, I have never known anybody with that name, let alone a beautiful girl. I simply like that name a lot. So, with that out of the bag let me unveil to you my first Google chrome theme – Shruti.

Get Shruti

You need to be on the Google Chrome Beta Channel to install themes right now or you need to be running the Chromium Build ( as I do ).

Office 2010 : Quick Peek

Finally I got my hands on the only product ( Now, they’ve got Windows 7, that makes the count 2 ;) ) that reveals Microsoft’s true genius – MS Office. I did try to take a look when it was at the technical preview state, but my Win-7 Beta somehow refused to go along. Now, with lots of expectations – especially after the trailer ( Yup, a full-blow HD trailer  ) I downloaded it.

Gosh ! MS Guys after all have a sense of humor :P

  • The installation was a breeze. The app just asks whether you want to upgrade or do a fresh install. Everything else is taken out of your hands. Characteristic of the Win7 experience – something I hate and love.

Yea ! I got it

I woke up this morning expecting another dreary day. Then surprise surprise Google dropped me a mail. Finally after nearly 6 months of waiting and steadfastly stopping myself from registering for a 2nd person invite Google decide to invite me to preview Google Wave. I’m going on high wave right now :D

Revisiting Linux : Random Jottings

After a long hiatus, I nearly gave up Linux. This was in part due to the wonderfulness of Windows 7 and the tedious task of setting up another Arch Linux. So, when my semester exams finally drew their curtains I decided to launch into it once again.

My LXDE DESKTOP - screenshot

Deciding that Arch wasn’t for me till my bandwidth starts soaring up really high, I went the Crunchbang way. Downloaded a Hardy installation of all the dumbest things I could do. I then proceeded to give it a Gapo-branding.deb :P . Ended with a satisfactory result on Openbox, that wonderful window manager. Dived into the wonder of Conky-1.7 with img & lua support. This is seriously cool stuff. With image rendering conky is now capable of seriously emulating rainmeter. Can’t wait till I start tinkering into it.

The Joy of Minesweeping

Now, this may sound dumb . Remember that default game that you never gave much notice ? MINESWEEPER  .Yup, the very same. Some of you may already have begun playing Minesy long ago. Many of you may have clicking around the board to have just some fun and watch with satisfaction watch all the bombs go kaboom !!! :D . Now, today as a tribute to the wonderful yet remarkably simple game, I made an video and How-to.

Now how did my metamorphosis came about ? All due to my good friend Raj. I always knew that Minesweeper was something about probability, but did not get interested probably because I hate probablitly. ( For further details, refer MY POEM ;) ).

Playing Audio in WP!

Ho … ho. I found out finally how to pronounce linux. And guess what I have been doing it right, right from the first time I heard that word  . Found this audio clip in wikimedia commons.

Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux kernel

And if things still don’t work here’s the link for downloading :
HandLinux by Linus

That was how I actually started. The problem arised when I wanted to embed a player in my page, instead of just a link. And surprise, surprise  Ogg is not supported that easily. I looked into several 3rd party players, though they support Ogg the dynamic WP engine doesn’t seem to support them. WP simply supports, using a audio player plugin, based on flash any mp3 can be played.

FIFA 10 : First opinion

Yea ! It’s study holidays and what better time than this to play FIFA :D .Installed and played around 10 matches and here’s the first sneak-peak review. I did everything on Pro difficulty.

FIFA 10 -Rooney

Overall, there doesn’t seem to be any ground-shaking changes. Squads are all updated. New transfers are all in. Pity, all of this will get outdated once we reach 2010′s January Transfer window ;)

  1. Biggest Disappointment : There’s NO OPENING VIDEO. What ? I mean, I love those videos. A real big disappointment . In fact, the one on FIFA-06 was my alltime favourite. Remember

‘ Game after game after game … I realize the one thing still important in my life ….
